THCA, or tetrahydrocannabinolic acid, is a naturally occurring cannabinoid found in cannabis and hemp plants. THCA is the chemical precursor to THC. When exposed to sufficient heat, THCA undergoes decarboxylation and converts into THC.
THCA and THC are closely related cannabinoids, but they are not the same compound. THCA is the acidic precursor to THC and is found naturally in raw cannabis. Heating THCA through vaping, smoking or another method can convert it into THC.
Unheated THCA is not generally considered intoxicating in the same way as THC. Heating THCA converts it into THC, which can produce intoxicating effects. Products designed to heat THCA, including THCA vapes, can therefore produce a psychoactive experience.
